From November 9th to 21st, 2025, the 15th National Games will be jointly held in Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau. This sporting event, themed “Passionate National Games, Vibrant Greater Bay Area” and guided by the principles of “Green, Shared, Open, and Clean,” not only showcases the outstanding achievements of competitive sports but also serves as a grand stage for public participation, cultural exchange, and technological innovation.
Unprecedented Scale, Historic Collaboration Across Three Regions
The National Games will feature 34 major events and 419 minor events. Guangdong will host 366 events, Hong Kong 39, and Macau 14, distributed across 88 venues in the three regions. Mass participation events will also be large-scale, featuring 23 major events and 166 minor events, covering traditional and fun activities such as dragon boat racing, dragon and lion dancing, Tai Chi, and Go, truly bringing the National Games to the streets, commercial districts, and scenic spots, becoming a “national sports carnival.”
National Games for All: Mass Sports Events Convey the “Code of Public Sentiment”
The mass sports events, launched in February 2025, lasted nearly nine months, covering more than 20 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across China. Participants ranged in age from 8 to 81 and represented nearly 20 ethnic groups. The events innovatively integrated into scenic spots, neighborhoods, and commercial districts, such as holding orienteering competitions in Maoming’s lychee orchards and roller skating competitions on Nanjing Road in Shanghai, seamlessly blending sports with everyday life. Athletes from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau participated together, with Hong Kong participating in all events for the first time and winning multiple medals. Macau athletes shone in 14 events, collectively painting a vivid picture of sports integration.
Opening Ceremony: Lingnan Culture and the Flame of Technology Meet
On November 9, 2025, the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games was grandly held at the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center. Themed “Realizing Dreams for the Future,” it was divided into three chapters: “Same Roots, Same Origin,” “Same Heart, Same Fate,” and “Same Dream, Same Fulfillment.” The main stage, designed in a concentric circle shape and incorporating water technology, presents a magnificent image of the confluence of the Pearl River, Victoria Harbour, and the Lingdingyang waters. During the program, industrial robots strike the ancient bronze chime, facilitating a dialogue between the past and present. The main torch is lit jointly by torchbearers from Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macau, with the flame originating from combustible ice 1522 meters deep in the South China Sea, echoing the green National Games concept with the “flame of technology.”
Closing Ceremony: A World’s First “City Panoramic” Gala
On the evening of November 21, 2025, the closing ceremony of the National Games will be held at the Bao’an Happy Theater in Shenzhen. This is the first-ever seaside-themed closing ceremony in the history of the National Games, themed “Stars and the Sea,” creating the world’s first “city panoramic closing ceremony.” The stage uses the sea and sky as a backdrop and the city as scenery, designed as a giant sheet of paper “emerging from the water,” depicting the splendid culture of the Greater Bay Area. The program incorporated intangible cultural heritage elements such as lion dance and Cantonese opera, and innovatively created an “aquatic stage”—synchronized swimming and dragon boats danced together, culminating in a four-tiered human ladder symbolizing unity and solidarity. Naked-eye 3D and smart wearable technologies further enhanced the visual experience of this grand event.
